Tips for Selection of Target Metal

Gold - Most widely used target. Requires less heat. Best for heat sensitive samples
Gold/Palladium - Provides smaller grain size than gold alone. Nearly the same sputtering rate as gold.
Palladium - Used in x-ray microanalysis.
Platinum - Smaller grain size than gold or gold/palladium.Slower sputtering rate than gold or gold/palladium. More expensive.
Silver - Least expensive. Useful in museums and forensic laboratories.
