The shield consists of an annealed Pyrex tube mounted between two aluminum discs supported by arms of the carbon evaporation unit. Pyrex glass tube has a precisely proportioned slot to control the flow of carbon to the specimen. this fire-polished tube can easily be removed for cleaning, and will not crack from heat generated during evaporation.
