We recommend a monitoring & trap-out strategy for your apple pests so you can track the progress. Five weeks after the petals fall, hang a trap on the south side of the tree at eye level, using one trap per planting up to once acre. Check the trap daily. Keep a log of the number of flies captured. Then apply an approved spray 7 days after the first fly is caught. Repeat your sprays at 10 to 14 day intervals if flies continue to be captured. We also suggest monitoring your strategy for the apple maggot fly as well. However, this strategy will only work for the apple maggot fly and only for those orchards that have received working pest management during the previous two years.
